UPS and FedEx invoice adjustments: how to audit and dispute shipping charge corrections

Carriers measure your packages again, then bill the difference after delivery, along with address corrections and surcharges. Here are the 2026 amounts, how dimensional weight works, how to audit an invoice, and how to dispute with each carrier before the window closes.

Short answer

UPS and FedEx re-weigh and re-measure packages in their networks and bill the difference on a later invoice as a shipping charge correction or invoice adjustment, along with fees like address corrections ($25.25 at UPS and $25.50 at FedEx in 2026). For U.S. shipments, both accept billing disputes for 180 days: UPS from when you receive the invoice, FedEx from the invoice date. File in the UPS Billing Center or FedEx Billing Online with the tracking number, ship date and reason.

Key takeaways

  • Both carriers reserve the right to audit any package and adjust charges. UPS measures with “multidimensional measuring devices.”
  • Dimensional weight is length × width × height ÷ 139 for UPS daily rates and FedEx (166 for UPS retail rates). You're billed for whichever is higher, dimensional or actual weight.
  • In 2026, an address correction costs $25.25 per package at UPS and $25.50 at FedEx. UPS Ground residential delivery is $6.50; FedEx Home Delivery is $6.45.
  • UPS charges a Shipping Charge Correction Audit Fee when corrections average more than $1.00 per corrected package in an invoice week: the greater of $1.65 per corrected package or 12% of the corrections.
  • Dispute windows: UPS, 180 days from receiving the invoice. FedEx, 180 days from the invoice date for U.S. shipments and 60 days for international.
  • UPS can deny all of a requester's disputes if they file batches “without a substantial basis.” Dispute what you can support, and fix the rest at the source.

What is a shipping charge correction?

When you create a label on your own UPS or FedEx account, the price is based on what you declared: weight, dimensions, service and address. Both carriers' terms let them check any package and change the charges. UPS's tariff says it may weigh and measure packages with “multidimensional measuring devices” and adjust charges at its discretion. FedEx's Service Guide reserves the right to audit “service selection, shipment weight, and dimensions” and make adjustments “at any time.”

UPS calls the result a shipping charge correction. FedEx shows it as an invoice adjustment, and in FedEx Billing Online the measured dimensions of a dimension-rated package appear in the Messages section of its tracking details. Most UPS packages are billed after delivery, so a correction often shows up a week or more after the package shipped.

If you missed sending package data altogether, it costs more: UPS charges a Missing PLD fee of $4.70 per package, and FedEx bills by default dimensions or weights.

Illustration from Shopvibe: a package declared in a 12 × 10 × 6 in box but measured at 16 × 12 × 8 in. The actual weight didn't change; the dimensional weight doubled.

How dimensional weight adjustments work

Carriers price light, bulky boxes by the space they take up. Dimensional weight is length × width × height in inches, divided by the carrier's divisor, rounded up to the next whole pound. The carrier bills whichever is higher: dimensional weight or actual weight.

  • UPS: 139 for daily rates, 166 for retail rates on domestic shipments (139 for exports).
  • FedEx: 139.

That's why the most common correction isn't a heavier package but a bigger one. A 4 lb item in a 12 × 10 × 6 in box bills at 6 lb. Put it in a 16 × 12 × 8 in box and it bills at 12 lb, with no change in actual weight.

Enter each side rounded up to the next whole inch, as carriers usually do when they scan. Surcharges like Additional Handling have their own minimum billable weights.

Besides weight and size, these fees are often added after the label is created because they depend on what the carrier finds at delivery: whether the address was wrong, residential, remote, or the package needed special handling.

UPS 2026 Daily Rates guide (updated September 7, 2026) and FedEx 2026 surcharge changes (effective January 5, 2026). Negotiated rates and fuel surcharges vary by account. FedEx raised parcel rates an average of 5.9% for 2026 and has announced another 5.9% for January 4, 2027.

What triggers Additional Handling and Large Package charges

  • Additional Handling (UPS): over 50 lb actual weight; length plus girth over 105 in; longest side over 48 in; second-longest side over 30 in; over 10,368 cubic inches; or packaging that isn't fully in corrugated cardboard, such as soft packs over 18 × 14 × 6 in, wrapped, banded or cylindrical items. Dimension-based charges carry a 40 lb minimum billable weight. FedEx's criteria are almost the same, with an 18 × 13 × 5 in soft-pack limit.
  • Large Package (UPS) and Oversize (FedEx): length plus girth over 130 in, length over 96 in, over 17,280 cubic inches, or over 110 lb. UPS applies a 90 lb minimum billable weight.

Address validation doesn't protect you. UPS's rate guide says an address validated by UPS “may be incorrect or incomplete” and may still be corrected, with the fee. And if you show UPS rates at Shopify checkout, Shopify notes that UPS demand and handling surcharges aren't included in those rates.

How to audit a UPS or FedEx invoice

  1. Download the detail. Export the invoice with package-level lines from the UPS Billing Center or FedEx Billing Online. PDFs are fine to read but hard to sort.
  2. Isolate the adjustments. Filter for shipping charge corrections, weight and dimension adjustments, address corrections, residential and delivery area surcharges, and additional handling.
  3. Match each line to an order. Use the tracking number to find the order, what checkout charged, and the weight and box you declared.
  4. Sort into two piles. Dispute: the carrier's numbers don't match the package you shipped, a residential fee on a business address, or a duplicate charge. Fix: the correction was right because a product had no weight or the box on file was too small.
  5. Check the audit fee. If UPS charged a Shipping Charge Correction Audit Fee that week, it rises and falls with your corrections. Fixing the data lowers both.
  6. Add it up by cause. Totals by cause tell you whether to change packaging, product data or the rates customers pay.

How to dispute a UPS invoice adjustment

  • Deadline: UPS must receive the request within 180 days of when you received the contested invoice, or the dispute is waived. Unauthorized-charge disputes have 30 days.
  • Where: the UPS Billing Center (open the invoice and choose Dispute from the Actions menu), the billing contact form on ups.com, or mail.
  • What to include: the ship date, the tracking number and the reason.
  • Pay the rest. A partial payment isn't a dispute, and UPS may hold adjustments until the balance is paid.
  • Only file what you can support. The tariff requires a good-faith basis for each request. Batches filed “without a substantial basis” can lead UPS to deny all of that requester's requests.

How to dispute a FedEx invoice adjustment

  • Deadline: 180 days after the original invoice date for U.S. shipments (or the ship date if prepaid), and 60 days for international. Fraud disputes have 30 days.
  • Where: FedEx Billing Online, the invoice adjustment feature on fedex.com, or 1.800.463.3339 (say “billing”).
  • What to include: the reason, account number, tracking number and ship date.
  • Stay current. FedEx isn't obligated to refund overcharges on accounts that are or have been more than 60 days past due.
  • Response time: disputes filed in FedEx Billing Online get a response within three business days.

What evidence to send with a dispute

Neither UPS nor FedEx publishes a list of required evidence; their terms ask for the tracking number, ship date and reason. In practice, these make a dispute easier to approve:

  • The declared weight and dimensions next to the billed ones, for each tracking number.
  • A photo of the sealed package next to a tape measure on each side, and on a scale with the reading visible.
  • Your packing spec: which box and filler that product ships in.
  • For address corrections, the address as the customer entered it and as you sent it.
  • For residential surcharges, evidence the address is a business.

For a sense of scale on the carrier side: the USPS Office of Inspector General reported in July 2026 that USPS's package verification program collected more than $1.4 billion in short-paid postage from 2017 to 2025 and refunded about $300 million in overpayments. Carriers adjust in both directions, but mostly up.

Can you still get refunds for late deliveries?

Only on some express services. UPS's money-back guarantee is active for Next Day Air Early, Next Day Air, Next Day Air Saver and 2nd Day Air A.M., plus international express services, and suspended for Ground, 2nd Day Air and 3 Day Select. Claims are due within 15 days of the scheduled delivery and refund transportation charges only. FedEx reinstated its guarantee on January 13, 2026 for First Overnight, Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight and 2Day A.M.; all other services, including Ground and Home Delivery, remain suspended. FedEx requests are due within 15 days of the invoice date.

Doing it with Shopvibe

Disclosure: Shopvibe is our app. You can follow every step above without it.

Shopvibe reads the UPS, FedEx, USPS and DHL invoices you upload as CSV, PDF or a photo, matches each line to the Shopify order it shipped, and finds every adjustment added after purchase. Each one shows what checkout charged, what the label cost, and what the carrier added, grouped by cause. On the Launch plan it builds a dispute packet per carrier with the tracking numbers, invoice lines, and declared versus billed weight and dimensions. You review it and send it; Shopvibe doesn't contact carriers and never changes your store.

When the cause is your own data, like a product with no weight or a box size that's too small, Shopvibe points to the product instead, so you don't file disputes UPS would deny. See plans.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to dispute a UPS invoice?

180 days. The UPS tariff says requests for adjustment, including shipping charge corrections, must be received within 180 days of receiving the contested invoice, or the dispute is waived. Unauthorized charges have a 30-day window.

How long do I have to dispute a FedEx invoice?

For U.S. shipments, 180 days after the original invoice date. For international shipments, 60 days. Fraud disputes have 30 days.

What is a UPS shipping charge correction?

A change UPS makes to a package's charges after it audits the shipment, usually because its equipment measured a higher weight or larger dimensions than the label declared. It appears on a later invoice, because most UPS packages are billed after delivery.

What is the UPS address correction fee in 2026?

$25.25 per package in UPS's 2026 Daily Rates guide, updated September 7, 2026. FedEx charges $25.50 per correction in 2026.

What dimensional weight divisor do UPS and FedEx use?

139 for UPS daily rates and for FedEx. UPS retail rates use 166 for domestic shipments. Dimensional weight is length × width × height in inches divided by the divisor, rounded up to the next pound, and the carrier bills the higher of dimensional and actual weight.

What is the UPS Shipping Charge Correction Audit Fee?

A fee UPS charges when the average shipping charge correction in an invoice week is more than $1.00 per corrected package, calculated per account. It's the greater of $1.65 per corrected package or 12% of total corrections.

Can I get a refund for late UPS Ground or FedEx Ground deliveries?

No. Both carriers' money-back guarantees remain suspended for ground services. UPS honors its guarantee on Next Day Air services and 2nd Day Air A.M.; FedEx reinstated its guarantee on January 13, 2026 for First Overnight, Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight and 2Day A.M. Claims are due within 15 days.

Can I dispute every adjustment on my invoice?

You shouldn't. The UPS tariff requires a good-faith basis for each request and says batches filed without a substantial basis can lead to all of that requester's requests being denied. Dispute the adjustments you can support and fix the data behind the rest.
